WHO OWNS THE NAPA VALLEY – STAGS LEAP DISTRICT
Understanding the past is often the best guide to navigating the future. Patterns in land and winery ownership are among the clearest signals of how a region will continue to evolve, and few appellations illustrate this as well as the Stags Leap District.
Established in 1989, the district spans roughly 2,700 gross acres along the Silverado Trail, about 1,375 of them plantable. The Stags Leap District has held a global reputation since the 1976 Judgment of Paris and is home to some of the wine industry’s most celebrated producers and growers.
This report traces the district’s evolution through three eras:
The Founding Era (1890 – 1990)
The Consolidation Era (1991 – 2013)
The International Era (2014 – 2023)
Each distinct era has shaped the appellation, and each offers lessons for what may come next.
Who held the land, who sold and who is buying are signals worth reading closely, and the history of ownership often hints at what may come next.
